Rope Halters
Our rope halters are hand tied by us to your specifications using the finest quality 1/4 inch double braid nylon rope you can buy. There is no hardware to injure the horse and all splices are sewn and the ends are buried to prevent the "unraveling" effect that some other rope halters experience.  For information on using the rope halter and tying the latch knot, go to the Training - Haltering page.

New to the halters is the sewing of the fiador knot to prevent collapsing which is a commom problem with this particulat knot. There is no extra charge for the sewn version. Be aware, sewing the knot prevents you from "tweaking" the halter if you don't have a perfect fit but is highly recommended if you know your horse's correct size and fit is not an issue. Please let me know if you prefer the knot to reamin unsewn.

Left handed or right handed rope halter?

The halter in this picture is tied from the left side of the horse.  This is the “traditional” style. But, you may want to consider using a halter that is tied from the right side of the horse.  The reason you may choose to use this halter is that most of the work that you do with the horse is traditionally done on the left side of the horse. We normally mount on the left, halter & bridle on the left and in a lot of cases unknowingly longe, groom, and work on the left more than the right side of the horse.   Anything that you can do to get yourself over to the right side/right eye of the horse will benefit you greatly. There is no difference between the left hand halter and the right hand halter with the exception that we make the halter "backwards" with the loop and latch knot being tied on the right hand side of the horse.  It’s such a simple idea that can make a huge difference with your horse.

I welcome custom orders for halters as not all horses will be able to wear a standard size. Custom halters CANNOT be returned so be careful taking your measurements. NEVER use a metal tape! Use either a piece of string or a seamstress tape and compare it on a ruler. Measure from the middle of the knots for a great fit, keeping in mind that the halter will get a bit larger as the knots tighten up under use.

Click here to go to custom halter measurement worksheet

Click here to see standard halter measurements

Below is a general start for finding your horse's size.

Take a measurement around your horse's nose just below the cheek bone and at the throat latch. Note: the average horse is about 23-24" around the nose. Use a string to get the length of these measurements and lay the string out against a yardstick or tape measure. DO NOT USE A METAL TAPE MEASURE TO TAKE THESE MEASUREMENTS ON YOUR HORSE!

Or you can order the following sizes:

  • Mini - fits the "average" sized mini horse.
  • Pony - fits ponies/yearlings and very small horse heads. Approximately 20" around the nose.
  • Arab - fits cob/Arab size horse heads. Approximately 22" around the nose.
  • Horse - fits the average size horse head.  90% of the halters we sell are this size.  Approximately 24" around the nose.
  • Warmblood - fits the large horse i.e. warmbloods.  Approximately 26" around the nose.
  • Draft - fits the VERY, VERY large horse i.e. Percheron, Belgian, Gelderlander, etc. Approximately 28" around the nose.

Note: If you have to decide on a size -- It's better to have a halter that is a little bit too big than one that is too small!  If you are going to ride with the halter you want a 2"-4" space above the fiador knot to tie the lead rope into the halter (see the picture above, the lead rope is tied into the halter for riding).

Important: These halters are great training devices, but aren’t very forgiving – the breaking strength on the rope is so high that a horse won’t likely be able to get free on their own if they get into trouble . Do not leave a rope halter on your horse when you are not using it. Do not tie your horse in a trailer with a rope halter.

New! Side Pull/Hackamore Halter With Solid Brass Rings

Otherwise known as a "bitless bridle". Perfect way to ride with the halter without using a mecate. The brass rings make it easy to attach any rein with a clip and the brass ring at the bottom will accomodate a lead rope or longe line.

This can be made with the standard rope loops under the fiador instead of the brass ring (which adds quite a bit of weight). As with all my halters, the fiador knot is securely sewn to prevent it from falling apart under use.

I welcome ideas you may have for this item to suit your personal preferences so don't hesitate to email me and ask if I can accomodate you with a design more suited to your needs. The rings fall at the nose knots as would be in a standard rope halter but they can also be placed further apart to eliminate the nose knot pressure and fall at a more normal position next to the horse's mouth.

Rope Halter Kits

Making your own rope halter is a rewarding process.  You get an extra feeling of accomplishment knowing that your horse is responding to something personally made with your own hands.  The first time that you attempt to make a halter, you may spend a few hours tying and untying the knots, studying the instructions, and thinking about all the money you are saving making your own tack!  Don’t get discouraged if you make mistakes or have to start over from the beginning -- each successive rope halter that you make will be a little bit easier, until you have it down to a 10 minute process!

The kit includes 24' of rope to get you started and complete instructions for tying all of the knots in a step by step format. There's even a template for tying the fiador knot that can be used as is or enlarged into a full size template.

Available in Black, Blue, Red, Hunter Green and Burgundy.

LEAD ROPES AND LONGE LINES

Our premium lead ropes are made from the finest quality soft, marine grade double braided nylon rope you can buy. There is an inner core of braided rope covered by an outer core of braided rope. This gives the rope a "live" feel which you can use to send energy, direction, and feel to your horse.

Lead ropes come in either 1/2" or 5/8" diameter. Lenghts of 12' long, 14' long, or custom lengths upon request. The 22 ' lead comes in 1/2". Lead ropes are available in black with a leather popper at the end. Chooosing the diameter and length comes down to personal preference; the 5/8" lead rope is a better training tool, but if you are planning on riding with the lead rope as a rein, you should consider the 1/2" lead rope.

The 22 foot lead can be used as a longe line, or mecate rein with your halter in addition to being one of the best groundwork tools available.

This effectively gives you a rope hackamore for riding your horse with these training tools.

These lead ropes are rot resistant, resist abrasion, won't twist, are supple, and washable, both the eye and back splices are hand sewn to prevent "unraveling", and there is a leather popper on the end.  You are able to attach either of the styles of snaps, to our lead ropes, but this can cause you to lose energy in the rope with a snap.

The best way to attach this lead rope to the halter is to thread the lead rope through the fiador knotloop on the bottom of the halter.

If you purchase both a halter and lead rope from me, I will attach the two together upon request so that you can see how it works.

1/2" X 12' Lead Rope $27.00

1/2" X 14' Lead Rope $29.00

5/8" X 12' Lead Rope $32.50

5/8" X 14' Lead Rope $34.50

22' Longe Line $37.50

Consider getting a brass safety snap (sold separately at the bottom of this page) to attach to the premium leads as shown below.

NOTE: The 1/2" rope fits the ring on the snap better than the 5/8" rope but the 5/8" CAN be used. This is a great alternative to the Hosreman Leads for the simple reason that if the snap breaks (which they are designed to do under panic or heavy stress for safety purposes) you don't lose your entire lead rope as the snap can easily be replaced. However, the ensemble is a bit bulky compared to the Horseman leads....this is purely customer preference.

Progress Strings

Made from 5/16" double braid rope with an eye splice at one end and a leather popper at the other end. This is probably one of the most useful tools that you can carry. It is aptly named because you can progress significantly with your horses learning when used properly.   Both the eye and back splices are hand sewn so they won't unravel.

Use it on the ground to send energy to a horse -- spin the popper end at the shoulder or rump of a horse that is moving in to your space. I've done the back splice on the popper end with just enough weight for good action. You can fashion the progress string into a makeshift halter or use it to tie a horse out on the trail. Use it as a leash for your dog....

In the saddle, you can use the progress string in place of a crop to tap the horse in the rump. It is very useful to work out the neck reining concept on your horse -- with a helper on the ground using a lead rope or longe line, put the progress string around the neck of your horse. The pressure of the rope along with leg aids can easily teach a horse this concept.

Don't let the low price deter you....this is made of the same high quality rope as all my rope products but priced fairly to fit everyone's budget.

Continous Nylon "Roper" Rein

Nylon rope reins are made from ½"nylon double braid marine grade rope. Some people prefer polyester rope for riens. I don't. This nylon is super soft and will "fuzz" up with use, making it even softer on your hands. It's weighty and has a lot of "life" in it that poly rope usually doesn't have.

This is the same high quality rope that I use in my lead ropes and other products. These reins come nine, ten or eleven feet long with brass scissor snaps on each end to connect to the bit. I use a harness leather tab to connect the snap to the rope. This acts like a slobber strap to allow you to give your horse a quick release from pressure. The leather tabs are fastened with leather ties instead of rivets in the event the snap breaks and needs easy replaing.

Available in black only.

Split Nylon Reins

Nylon split rope reins are made from 1/2" or 5/16" nylon double braid marine grade rope (for a lighter feel than the the standard 1/2"). This is the same high quality rope that I use in my lead ropes and other products. These reins are seven feet long with brass scissor snaps on each end to connect to the bit and a leather popper on each end. I use a leather tab to connect the snap to the rope, tied in place with leather lacing in the event the snap breaks so it's easy to reapair the reins. The leather tabs act like slobber straps to allow you to give your horse a quick release from pressure. See above explanation for my use of nylon rope as opposed to polyester with the continuous roper rein.

These reins are available in black.

1/2" Split Nylon Reins $35.50

5/16" Split Nylon Reins $29.50

Nylon Mecate

Nylon mecate reins are made from ½" nylon double braid marine grade rope. The same high quality rope that we use in our lead ropes and other products. These mecates are 22 feet long with a leather popper on the end.  Can be used with a bosal or slobber straps.  There is a hand tied decorative knot ( gaucho knot) above the tassle at the slobber strap end which makes this mecate look exceptionally nice. The decorative knot it black and the popper is burgundy latigo.

These mecates are available in black or a mixed color mota (tassel) of black and color of your choice (at no extra charge).

(Color choice for a two color mota is any of the halter colors I have available. Just drop me an email after you order and I will make a note of your color selection)

Mane Hair Mecates

Traditional horse hair mecates provide a true feel to the horse for training.  Horse hair mecate reins are hand made from real horse hair.  There are different types, qualities, and strands available.  These mecates can be used with a bosal or headstall and slobber straps.

100% Mane Hair MecatesSofter feel in your hands.  Made from 100% pure mane hair and braided with either six or eight strands for a softer feel.  Hand twisted and then braided into 5/8" rope.  Exceptional quality.  Leather popper on one end, turks head braided into horse hair on the other.

Ask me about color selection if you have a preference.

Special color combos or solid colors may have to be ordered.

$85.00

Give you and your horse one of the best training aids available.  Slobber straps provide instant release when working with the bit to reward the horse for appropriate behavior.   They also provide protection for your mecate reins. Exceptional quality materials -- 8-9 oz. latigo in bugundy.   2" x 14¼" long (7" when folded).

Slobber straps are a double strap of leather with a hole in both ends. They are normally used with a snaffle and mecate reins. The slobber straps are folded and fit through the rings on the bit. They are designed to be used with a bit that has at least 3" rings so that there is room for the headstall and slobber straps.

The rein is attached through both straps with a half hitch knot which allows for easy adjustment and removal -- no matter how hard the rein gets pulled, this knot will easily loosen.

Slobber straps are especially useful to avoid wear on your mecate reins and they keep the reins out of the water when your horse gets a drink. The weight of the slobber straps assist with the mecate reins in providing an instant release (reward) to the horse when training. This is essential when you consider that you only have 2-3 seconds to reward your horse when you get appropriate behavior before the horse looses the concept of relating the behavior to the reward.

They have a 3/4" hole with a 1" slit to make it easy to slide mecates through.

They are 2 inches wide and 14¼" inches long (7" when folded).  Sold per pair.

Slobber Straps $10.99

Go to the section on Mecate Reins for information on how to tie mecate reins into the slobber straps.

Training Stick

The training stick is truly one of the most useful tools that we own. It is a four foot long fiberglass pole.  This training stick has exceptional balance and feels great in your hand when working with your horses.  Our training stick has a golf club grip on one end and a long lasting, metal ring dipped in Plasti Dip on the other end, giving it a sleek look and feel. This stick weighs in at just under a half pound. We like this type of training stick because it does not flex like a longe whip.

We tie a plastic grocery bag to the ring on the end of the training stick to help with some of our training. We use the training stick primarily for these purposes:

  • We use it to initiate contact with a new horse. You can stay out of harms way and use the stick as an extension of your body to touch the horse all over. The leather straps on the end are great as a tool to feel the horse all over.
  • When round penning, as an extension of our body to accentuate power and to keep the horse moving.
  • To yield our horses from the ground.
  • While riding, to yield other horses from on top.

Training stick;  four feet long, black, golf club grip handle & dipped metal ring with leather strap attached and a leather lacing for attaching a bag or flag.

NOTE:I will not attach a long piece of rope with a popper on the end the way many training sticks are being made today since it becomes a whip instead of a training tool and that is not the intended purpose of this item.

These are on a Buy Now basis only because they will be shipped in a mailing tube separately. Shipping will be added when you check out. Due to its size, shipping is set at $8.75 anywhere within the continental U.S.

Safety Snap

These are for use with lead ropes and longe lines, as optional equipment, or if you are going to build your own.

The snap has a big enough ring to attach any of the ½" leads with an eye splice but is a little difficult for the 5/8" leads to fit through so I don't recommend trying it.

Available in solid brass only.

4 1/4 inch long with a 1 inch snap.
